In 1969 Porsche and Volkswagen exhibited a new sports car at the Frankfurt Motor Show - the VW Porsche 914. Like the very first VW, Porsche developed this joint project with a mid-engine and the body work came from the Karmann Works in Osnabrck. The model was available in two variants. The type with Porsche 2 litre 6 cylinder engine known as the 914/6, was assembled by Porsche. Volkswagen were responsible for the version with smaller 4 cylinder engine (1679 cc) as the works relied on parts from the VW 411 production car.
